The Ancilla College men’s soccer team split a pair of matches at the recent Lakeland Community College Tournament, falling 4-0 to the hosts in Saturday’s opener before rebounding for a 2-0 win over Cuyahoga Community College on Sunday.
Ancilla (2-4-0, 2-4-0 Region 12) played most of Saturday’s match a man down after an early red card to midfielder Horraine Lewis. Lakeland striker Dean Miller led the way for Lakeland with two goals on the day while Alfred Majer and Antons Trifonovs also scored for the Lakers (3-2-1, 2-2-1 Region 12).
Alex Howe made four saves on the day for Ancilla.
The Chargers rebounded with a much better performance on Saturday, helping Howe earn his second clean sheet of the season in the 2-0 victory over Cuyahoga (0-4-0, 0-2-0 Region 12).
Cody Koesters hooked up with Remezan Abdullah for the opening goal in the 58th minute, evading two Cuyahoga defenders and setting up Abdullah for a point blank finish and 1-0 lead.
Koesters would seal the game 19 minutes later, running onto a long header from Michael Lobbo and calmly finishing past Dakota Wendt for the 2-0 final.
Koesters and freshman defender Cesar Landin were both named to the all-tournament team for Ancilla, with Koesters receiving “Best Striker” honors for his play.
The Chargers will resume play on Wednesday, September 15 when they host Kellogg Community College at Charger Field in Donaldson, IN. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
