MATTOON, IL – Poor first halves proved costly as the Ancilla College men’s basketball team dropped both games at the Lake Land Community College Holiday Tournament this weekend, losing 98-71 to Lake Land Community College on Friday and 84-53 to Danville Area Community College on Saturday.
In Friday’s game, the Chargers (1-7) found themselves trailing 36-9 in the first half to the NJCAA Division 1Lakers (9-2). Though Ancilla was able to cut the lead down to 14 in the second half, they would never find themselves any closer the rest of the game.
Michael Hornback and Josh Wilson each scored 10 points in the game to lead Ancilla while Joby Renbarger added nine points and eight rebounds.
“Lake Land outmatched us physically and athletically,” said Ancilla head basketball coach Greg Neeley. “We turned the ball over way too much for us to have success against them.”
Similar to the slow start on Friday, Ancilla found themselves down 51-18 at halftime against the Jaguars (10-4). Though Ancilla would outscore Danville in the second half, it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the deficit.
Renbarger led the Chargers with 13 points and seven rebounds while Antonio Cannon chipped in with 11 points.
“We made some corrections and played a much better second half,” said Neeley. “Danville was another really good team on our non-conference schedule, and hopefully these non-conference challenges have prepared us for the upcoming conference season.”
The Chargers will return to action on Jan. 8 when they travel to Jackson, MI, for their first conference game against MCCAA Western Conference rival Jackson Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. EST.
