12/28/10 “Play for a Cure” is the senior project of Alexis Christlieb, a student at Culver Military Academy.
Alexis said, “Every senior is required to complete one (senior project) before graduating.” She explained, “The project is self initiated and needs to involve leadership and service. It isn’t just community service for 30 hours, we create a vision and implement a project to serve a social need within a community. Through this project students have an opportunity to integrate what they have learned about leadership and service during their time at Culver.”
“Play for a Cure” is similar to Coaches vs. Cancer. Through the sale of items at the concession stands, a donation box and individual contributions, the money raised will be sent directly to the American Cancer Society.
“Play for a Cure” will be held on Saturday, January 15th when Lakeland Christian Academy comes to Culver to take on the Culver Girls Academy in a basketball game. Game time is 7:30 with a $5 admission. This game is open to the public.
When asked why she choose the American Cancer Society Alexis said, “Although no one in my immediate family has been affected by cancer of any type, I have seen the hardships other families go through when a loved one is diagnosed.” She continued, “A few of my friends’ parents or grandparents have acquired cancer and their family constantly worries and wonders whether when they say goodbye, if that will be the last time they are able to talk to them.”
Ms. Christlieb said she was “inspired to do this project for them as well as through Relay for Life.” She said she has attended the Culver Relay for Life for the past three years and last year served as a team captain. Alexis said she was shocked when they asked those in attendance to crack a glow stick if a parent or sibling had been diagnosed and then when other relatives had been hit with the big C. She estimated 70% of those at the event had a lit glow stick.
The public is invited and encouraged to came watch some great girls basketball and participate in the “Play for a Cure” on Saturday, January 15th at CMA.
