10/18/10  Marshall County REMC and Indiana’s other electric cooperatives, is pleased to announce its 2012 Calendar Art Contest.

The contest, in its 14th year, provides young Hoosier artists a unique opportunity to develop and showcase their talent. Electric Consumer — the statewide publication for Indiana’s electric cooperatives — sponsors the program, which is open to all kindergarten through 12th grade Indiana students.

From now until March 18, 2011, students are invited to submit original artwork reflective of the calendar month for which their grade level is assigned. For example, high school seniors would submit artwork for the month of December.

Entries are then judged and winners from each grade selected. Those winners then represent the specific month in the “2012 Cooperative Calendar of Student Art.” Ninehonorable mention winners are also included in a special section of the calendar.

Not only will the contest winners have their artwork published in the calendar, which is viewed by thousands of electric cooperative members across the state, their pieces will be part of a special exhibition through a partnership with the Hoosier Salon.

The Hoosier Salon, headquartered in Indianapolis, is a statewide nonprofit arts organization whose mission is to create an appreciation of visual art by promoting Hoosier artists and their art. The salon holds an annual exhibition for artists at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis. This year, for the first time, calendar contest winners had their work displayed at the museum as part of the salon’s exhibition to encourage young artists in Indiana. In addition, the students’ artwork will tour the Hoosier Salon’s galleries in Indianapolis, New Harmony and Wabash.

“As school systems across America continue to cut funding to, or even eliminate, art programs, Indiana’s electric cooperatives are thrilled to offer our young artists a forum to spotlight their talent through our art contest and through our partnership with the Hoosier Salon,” said Emily Schilling, Electric Consumer editor.
