Twin Lakes Camp for Children with Special Needs, located at the corner of Peach and 12th Roads, will be holding its first-of-the-season fundraiser fish fry on Friday September 17 at the camp. Twin Lakes also plans 4 more fish fries, two weeks apart, on Oct. 1, Oct. 15, Oct. 29, and Nov 5. You can enjoy “all you can eat” fish, fires, cole-slaw, deserts, and soft drinks between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. Cost is $9.00 for adults and $5.00 for children up to 12 years old.
Director Pete Rekitzke [pronounced: re-kit’-ski] says that he has had many inquiries as to what is going on at the camp. The answer is that like many other non-profits, the camp has been struggling financially for a couple of years. As a result, he was unable to open after the summer of 2008. But he is determined to open next summer, in 2011, and to service at least twice the number of Marshall County children with special needs as ever before.
He is re-focusing the camp’s appeal to grant-giving organizations, away from its recreational image and toward a medical and therapy-centered image. Rekitzke explains, “Foundations that offer grants seem to believe that recreation isn’t therapeutic. The camp’s mission has always been to provide therapy in a recreational setting.”
