Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita announced today the launch of a new mobile tool for online voter registration. The online registration mobile tool, accessed when www.in.gov/sos is viewed through an internet-enabled cell phone, increases convenience for today’s voter while giving individuals another opportunity to meet the Oct. 4 voter registration deadline.

“Advancing our online voter registration tool with mobile capability continues further down our path to innovate and modernize our election process,” Secretary Rokita said. “With the objectives of increased accessibility, ease of use and accuracy, the new mobile voter registration option demonstrates Indiana’s continued focus on harnessing technology to serve voters and taxpayers.”

Indiana is one of eight states where citizens can register to vote online. Residents with a valid Indiana driver’s license or Indiana state-issued identification card can use this latest tool to submit a new voter registration application or to update an existing voter registration record via their cell phones. Historically, voters have most commonly registered by mail using a paper-based application form or registered in-person at a county voter registration office, the Indiana Election Division or a branch office of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Applicants will be required to verify their voting eligibility and personal information, which will then be cross-referenced with databases from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Voters will instantly receive a confirmation of their application that they can print. Once confirmed online, the county’s voter registration office will approve or reject registrations subject to the same criteria used for other applicants, such as residency or incarceration following conviction of a crime.

With two weeks remaining until the registration deadline, voters without the capability to access the mobile version of the online feature can visit www.IndianaVoters.com to register or update their current voter information. Nearly 8,000 individuals have taken advantage of the online tool since its launch in July.

Additionally, voters can check to see candidates running for public office in their area on the ‘Who’s On Your Ballot’ feature at www.IndianaVoters.com , confirm their voter registration or check the location of their polling place.
