City Council Tables Action on Ordinance Prohibiting Dogs in Oakhill Cemetery

December 27, 2010

12/28/10 Dogs are still welcome in Oakhill Cemetery.  Monday night the Plymouth City Council table second and third reading of the ordinance that would have prohibited citizens walking their dogs in the cemetery.

Mayor Senter had communications with a couple of citizens and suggested the ordinance.  Since first reading he has received more comments from people who use the cemetery responsibly.

Councilman Don Gardner motion to table any action on the ordinance and Mike Delp seconded the motion.

Councilman Wayne Smith said, “I’ve got calls from people in the 3rd district.  I’m not in favor of this ordinance at all.”  He then suggested looking at the resolution passed by the Plymouth Park Board that regulates dogs in the park are to be on a lease and pet owners are to pick up any droppings from the dogs.  He also suggested signage.

Smith closed by saying, “The cemetery is a good safe environment to walk dogs.  I’d hate to eliminate it because of a couple of bad apples.”
