The saying in basketball, “Defense wins you championships” is very true, but good shooting also helps! Just ask the Lady Pilgrim Head Coach Dave Cox. His Lady Pilgrims dropped their first game of the season 38-30 to Valparaiso on Saturday.
“We will not win ballgames if we continue shooting 18% for a ballgame. That puts to much pressure on our defensive efforts. I thought we played well enough to beat Valpo if we would have just shot the ball better”, said Coach Cox.
It was a poor shooting performance by Plymouth getting off 49 shots, hitting on only 9!
“We have a solid four starters that can shoot the ball well, and they simply didn’t. We knew what to expect from Valparaiso coming into the game. Too their credit they executed, we didn’t. They are a REAL good team, and it was nice to see our (Plymouth) girls hang in there despite their offensive struggles.”, added Cox.
Examples of Plymouth’s tenacity defensively was the 17 steals collected off Valparaiso, scoring 12 points off those turnovers. For a rare time, Plymouth stayed with the Lady Vikings in the rebounding department, 34 apiece.
“Well, Coach Gray lost their 6’4 big girl, Stephanie Lang, so she changed their style of play to a more “up and down” style. I thought we did well to slow them down. We needed to win the steals & rebounding stats to give ourselves a chance to beat them. Our girls did that, we just didn’t shoot well. We will learn from this loss. I really like the make-up of this team.”, said Cox.
Leading Scorers: Valparaiso: Arianna Paul: 12 pts…4 rebounds & steals…5 TO. Went 4/4 from the Free Throw line in the final minute to keep Valpo ahead.
Plymouth: Lauren Tanner: 7 pts….1 steal
