It was Senior Night at the Rockpile Friday night featuring two Marshall County foes, the Plymouth Rockies & Bremen Lions. History was on the side of the Rockies with a consecutive winning streak over the Lions dating back to 1988. After the final whistle blew, the Rockies declawed the Lions 42-19. The fact it was Senior night for Plymouth seemed to be a spark one senior needed to make a difference.
Running-back/Linebacker, Brock Smith wasn’t to be denied as he scored four touchdowns in the contest for Plymouth, including a 20 yard interception return for the first score of the second half expanding the Plymouth lead to 21-12.
“Brock (Smith) was absolutely tremendous. What didn’t he do?”, said Rockie Coach John Barron.
“With inexperience in KEY positions this season, we need Seniors, especially on Senior Night, to step up and win this ballgame for us.”, said Barron. “I didn’t like how we came out in the first half. Flat. Hardly any emotion on the sideline. I was disappointed in how our approach was after the first half. To our kids credit we were up by only two points at halftime, and not down by two, or more.”, he added.
The Lions were feeling pretty good about their situation by halftime trailing only two, 14-12. That’s when Brock Smith took over. Junior Quarterback Nate Leeper, did a three step drop and locked on his receiver to his left and threw it right into the arms of Smith for the 20 yard interception and score.
Barron said, “Brock’s pick was huge. We needed a momentum boost & got it from him on that play. We put Brock at Ouside Linebacker this season so the other three (Hardy, Evans & Knapp) can learn from him.” “I’m thankful to have a Brock Smith back this year”, said Barron.
Smith is one of three four year starters on the Rockies this season. Houston Hodges quarterbacked his first full game vs Bremen. “It doesn’t matter where I put him, he will give the team 150%!”, said Barron.
Even though Hodges didn’t complete a pass in the ballgame, “play execution” was what Coach Barron was looking for. “Houston didn’t disappoint. We just need to get him more active in our offensive scheme of things. He’s a weapon, we need to use it!”, he added.
Senior Tim Hardy led the Rockies in tackles with 8.5 on the evening.
Rockies take their show on the road for the first time this Friday night at Rochester.
