02/14/11 The Union-North United School Board held a regular meeting on February 10. during the meeting, Superintendent Dr. Terry Barker announced that the current head football coach and athletic director, Brian Stults, has tendered his resignation. According to Barker, Stults will complete the school year along with any additional days included in his contract. Stults has been in the school system for nine years and served as Athletic Director for two years.
As the board discussed proposed appointments, board member Dave Grenert referred to Barker’s announcement and suggested that the appointment of Ken Moore as a volunteer junior high football and volunteer varsity football coach should be postponed. Grenert explained that he felt the person who will be hired to replace Stults should have an opportunity to interview potential volunteers. The board agreed and deleted the consideration of Moore’s appointment at this time.
The board approved by a vote of 5-0 the Jr.-Sr. High School course descriptions for the school year 2011-2012. Several board members remarked at the number of courses that are offered to students. Principal Chuck Phillips said there is usually a minimum of 15 students enrolled in order to offer a course, but indicated there were some exceptions such as foreign languages, Honors English, and others.
Grenert said, “This is a step in the right direction.” Board member Rob Swathwood echoed Grenert’s remarks saying, “I didn’t realize we could offer so much.”
Superintendent Barker noted that there are several pieces of legislation being considered by the Indiana General Assembly. He suggested that board and audience members monitor the bills and contact their legislators with their opinions. Barker said, “Several things are in the works to change the face of public education.”
The board approved accepting donations to the junior high football program and donations from Office Max to the elementary school. Other names mentioned as donors included TCU and the LaPaz Lions Club.Among other things, some of the donations will be used for new uniforms for the football program, according to Barker.
The board will meet for training on February 24 and the next regularly scheduled meeting will be on March 10.
