Major Gas Leak in Plymouth Forces Evacuations

March 1, 2011

03/01/11 A major gas leak occurred about 2:30 this morning in Plymouth at the former United Technologies building at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Liberty Street.  The leak caused a major evacuation of dozens of homes on the city’s south east side.

The American Red Cross has set up a shelter at the First United Church of Christ located at the corner of Center and Adams Street in downtown Plymouth.

The area evacuated includes but is not limited to the Garden Courts Apartments at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Liberty Streets, homes as far to the east as Marlou Place, Webster Avenue on the south and Liberty Streets to the north.

NIPSCO is on the scene formulating a plan of action, although they have not entered the building at this time to determine the actual cause and size of the leak.
