06/07/11 During a short meeting of the Plymouth Park Board on Monday night, the official resolution naming the city’s newest park “River Park Square” was signed unanimously by board members. Mayor Mark Senter had made an announcement of the adoption the name at a ceremony on Saturday during the Yellow River Festival. The Festival was held on a portion of the park area.
Reading the resolution to the board members was City Attorney Nelson Chipman. It was noted that the Mayor’s Youth Council used surveys included in city water bills and a poll on WTCA-AM1050 website to gather the options of residents before declaring the name.
The park covers an area bordered by Garro Street, Water Street and the Yellow River, within exception of property that is privately owned.
The pool was closed for three days after the humidity and other weather related problems caused paint in newly painted areas to not adhere. The water level had to be lowered four feet to correct the problem. Park Superintendent Mike Hite said the pool was reopened on Monday.
Next in line to receive resurfacing will be the tennis courts. Weather permitting, the work will begin on Wednesday and be completed for use by Saturday, according to Hite. Hite said tennis lessons are due to begin next week.
Other work at park areas included resurfacing of the new infield at the large diamond at Packard Woods. Playground wood fiber was delivered on May 31 and will be spread in play structures areas in the near future.
Hite noted in his report that the Greenway Trail had to be monitored daily for flooding (during recent rains). He said they had to close sections of the Trail for several days.
The board approved contracts for the Latin Fest (Heart & Hands) for June 18, for Delta Theta Tau to run the concession stand at the Amphitheater this summer, for Jetta and the Jellybean performance for Family Day on July 16, and for the Missoula Children’s Theater performances on June 10-11 and 24-25. The Park Board will receive ten percent of the booth rentals for the Latin Fest and ten percent of the concessions profits.
Mayor Senter told the board that a committee has been formed to hold a small parade, ceremony and candlelight vigil on September 11 as memorial remembrance.
