CENTREVILLE, MI – With only nine holes to go, Ancilla College freshman Zach Schumacher needed to raise his level of play and shoot no worse than par to earn a spot in the NJCAA Region 12 Tournament.
He did just that.
Schumacher finished with a 78 in his third and final round of play at Island Hills Golf Club on Tuesday to make the cut an advance to the region tournament, scheduled for May 9 at Bedford Valley Golf Club in Battle Creek, MI.
“It’s a great achievement for a freshman golfer,” said Ancilla golf coach Marc Hayden. “I’m just excited for Zach’s opportunity. It’ll be a great experience for him to learn for next year’s season.”
It was a clutch performance for the freshman, who has been somewhat inconsistent throughout his first year of collegiate golf.
After shooting 83 and 84 in his first two rounds, Schumacher finished with his second best round of golf this season, second only to his season-opening 77 he shot at the Ancilla College Invitational in early April.
Teammate Skye Shaneyfelt wasn’t quite as fortunate. Despite playing the best golf of his Ancilla career, Shaneyfelt missed the cut by seven strokes.
The sophomore opened up with a career best 82 during Monday’s morning round, followed by an 86 and 84 to close out his tournament play.
“If this was last year, Skye would have made the cut,” said Hayden. “This year, because the field was better, he just missed out.”
The NJCAA Region 12 Division II Championship will be held Monday, May 9 at Bedford Valley Golf Club in Battle Creek, MI. Action will tee off at 9:00 a.m. EDT.
