DONALDSON, INDIANA – Two Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference softball teams met at Ancilla College, both looking for their first wins in conference. Both were successful, as Ancilla (11-11, 1-7 MCCAA) split a double header with Glen Oaks Community College (5-14, 1-9 MCCAA). The visiting Vikings won the first game 11-1, while the host Chargers won game two by a 10-5 score.
Ancilla’s lone offensive highlight in game one was an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning by Gretchen Gieseking. In her first start of the year, Ancilla’s Trisha Dillon pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one earned run.
Game two started out much like the first with both teams scoring one run in their half of the inning. Ancilla scored their run when Alysha Faler singled and moved to third on a fielding error with one out in the inning and scored one out later on a Demi Schrader RBI single.
Ancilla increased their lead to 5-1 in the second inning, scoring all four runs with two outs. Kaitlyn Dick reached on a walk and moved to second on a Trina Bauer single to center. Both players scored when Faler reached base on an error. Gieseking followed up with a two run home run to complete the Charger scoring for the inning.
Glen Oaks cut the lead to 5-4 with three runs in the top of the third. Ancilla answered with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Dillon started off the fourth with a single to right and moved to second on a Kaitlyn Dick bunt single. Dillon scored when Bauer, the next batter in the inning, reached on an error. Dick scored one batter later on a Faler infield ground out. With one out in the inning, a Gieseking solo home run made the score 9-4 in favor of the Chargers.
Ancilla scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, increasing their lead to 10-4. Dillon led off the inning with a triple and scored two batters later on a Bauer infield ground out.
Glen Oaks completed the scoring in the top of the sixth with another run of their own.
Dillon finished the day 3-5, while Gieseking and Schrader finished the day 3-7. Gieseking was the RBI leader for Ancilla, finishing with four. Bauer ended the day with 2 RBI, while Faler and Schrader had one each.
“It’s good to get that first conference win,” started Ancilla coach Scott Reese. “We have a big weekend ahead of us with games tomorrow and Saturday. I’m hoping we can take some momentum with us into those big double headers.”
Ancilla’s next game is tomorrow at Muskegon Community College (18-11, 8-2 MCCAA) at 3:00 p.m. They play at Grand Rapids Community College (10-14, 4-6 MCCAA) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
