08/29/11 Ancilla College volleyball coach Lana Singleton has announced the 11-player roster that will represent the NJCAA Division 2 program during the 2011 season.
Four sophomores return from the 2010 team that finished 12-24. Leading the way is Danielle Burge, a libero and defensive specialist, who was selected to the Honorable Mention All-Conference team by the coaches of the MCCAA Western Conference last season. She will be joined by Carlee Davis, Nicole Trudell, and Miranda Hammons.
“These girls understand and know the value of hard work,” said Singleton. “They will be called upon to lead on and off the court.”
New to the Lady Chargers are Keri Friend, Chelsie Miller, Kelly Duke, Natasha Ware, Haley Markley, Rebecca Bunkowfst, and Kristen Trudell.
“Friend, Markley, and Kristen Trudell have all spent many years in club programs and the freshman group as a whole is very athletic,” said Singleton. “Many were multi-sport athletes in their high schools.”
Singleton expects her group to play quicker than they have in the past and Lady Charger fans should expect to see a more balanced attack going forward.
“Our digging defense is strong,” said Singleton. “We have girls that play with a lot of heart and do not give up easily on the ball. That, coupled with an outstanding quick setter in Kristen Trudell, should speed up our offense tremendously. Our challenge will be hitting around or through the big blockers we will see in our conference. Our tallest girl is 5’8 ½” and we will see teams with half of their rosters close to or over six feet.”
Walt Pickerell will begin his first season as an assistant coach with the team while Kim Richie returns as the trainer. Sarah Cawthon and Cy Page will serve as team managers.
The Lady Chargers will open the season on August 30th when they host Morton College. The game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. EDT at the LifePlex in Plymouth, IN.
