07/08/11 Being the biggest and the best has become a Plymouth tradition that extends to fun and helping a good cause.

The Art Thomas Big Red Open – in its 21st year – is accepting registrations for golfers interested in a great afternoon to help the cause of athletics at Plymouth Community Schools.

“We believe this to be the largest high school alumni type golf outing in the U.S.,” said Greg Renz, one of the events founders and organizers. “It could not survive without the continued support of the old timers along with the influx of younger players. We appreciate all of them still being a part of the team.”

The Plymouth Country Club will host the event on August 5 and it will have a couple of new wrinkles for the coming year. Those wanting to play who may have some time concerns can sign up to play a shorter event.

“This year, we are adding an option to play in a 9 hole event,” said Renz. “Those choosing to participate in the nine hole tournament will tee off around 2:30 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. and have all the same benefits as the 18 hole players except for lunch.”

The event will also have a new co-sponsor.

“This year, we are excited to begin an affiliation with the Plymouth Alumni Association,” said Renz. “The Plymouth Alumni Association began its existence last summer.  The mission is to provide a means for PHS alumni to network and interact via social networking, to provide assistance to those holding class reunions, and to financially support extracurricular activities and other initiatives of the school corporation. We are encouraging all our golfers to join their alumni association.”

As part of that relationship with the Plymouth Alumni Association, there will be “rebate” of $10 to each player who is a member of the PAA and has paid their entry fee in advance.  Those who choose to sign up for the PAA as new members on the day of the event (annual dues are $20) will also get a $10 rebate assuming they paid their entry fee in advance.  All rebates will be handled at the event.

The 18 hole tournament will be the same as all prior years – five or six man teams, tee off at 11AM, lunch as you make the turn, beverages on the course, two teams playing together, dinner following the round, gifts and prizes with a cost of $85 per person.

The fee for the nine hole tournament will be $55 per person.

For both tournaments, registration must be turned in by no later than July 29 to insure availability of a golf cart for the group. Anyone not paying their registration fee in advance will be charged an additional $5 at the registration table.

You can pick up a registration form at the Pilot News, Plymouth Country Club or by emailing plymouthschoolsalumni@gmail.com, grenz@hoosierdriving.com or call Renz at 574-286-4253.  Please mail all entry forms to: Art Thomas Big Red Open, P O Box 105, Plymouth, IN 46563.
