Bremen stops 14 year drought with 21-8 win over the Rockies

Last nights football season opener for the Bremen Lions couldn’t come any quicker than it did last night against the Plymouth Rockies.  After a successful season last year, making it to the 2A Regional eventually losing in OT to 2A Champ Renseallear Central, the Lions were ready for a upset to start their season.  By games end….21-8 was the final and Bremen ended a 14 year losing streak to the Rockies.

“We struggled in the first half with all the turnovers we had.  But we were only down 8-7 at the half.  I told our kids we were in the ballgame and needed to work harder at doing what we do best.  Compete!   And they did in the second half.”, said Bremen Coach Bob Holmes.

That first half was back and forth with both teams struggling to hold onto the football.  Bremen had 3 turnovers & lost all 3.  But Plymouth couldn’t capitalize on any of them.

“That was a big issue for us”, said Rockie Coach John Barron.  “Then in the second half we get down to their (Bremen) 24 yard line and fumble the quarterback-center exchange and give the Lions the ball back, killing any momentum we generated.  That was the 4th or 5th exchange drop in the game for us.  Too many.  Good news is, it’s correctable.”

Plymouth scored the games first touchdown off a specialty team block punt by junior Ethan Sampson in the 1st quarter.  Junior quarterback Ike Kastner scampered 7 yards for the TD on the 6-play, 20 yard drive.

“Sampson has been great since two-days.  He really is a smart player.”, added Barron.

After both teams exchanged turnovers, Bremen finally scored with 1:07 left in the second quarter on a 9 play-72 yard drive seeing Bremen Seniorback, Braxton Miller scoring his first of two  touchdowns of the night from 9 yards out.  Plymouth had 8-7 halftime lead.

Plymouth’s offense couldn’t get going in the second half, thanks to some untimely fumbles stalling drives in the third quarter.

Bremen finally scored with 1:53 in the third quarter when Bremen Senior QB, Nate Leeper hit his WR Ben Hueni on a 29 year sideline route to five Bremen a 15-8 lead.

Plymouth had another drive stalled in the fourth quarter at the Bremen 24 yard line looking for tie, but another bad QB-Center exchanged gave Bremen the ball and eventual turn to score.   Braxton Miller scored from 5 yards out to make the final scored 21-8 Bremen.

Next Rockies game is next Friday vs Rochester.   WTCA Tailgate Show starts at 5:10pm.
