08/12/11 On Tuesday, August 2, the Indiana State Police Department held an awards and recognition ceremony in Indianapolis. The ceremony honored and recognized individuals from around the state for their dedication to service, bravery and devotion to the department, and to the citizens of Indiana. Those individuals honored were employees of the Indiana State Police Department and other public safety agencies.
The idea for this event was conceived by Indiana State Police Superintendent Paul Whitesell, Ph.D. Superintendent Whitesell felt the need to publicly recognize the achievements and deeds of self sacrifice and accomplishment that all too often go without the proper recognition.
Bremen Post Senior Trooper Brian Hoffman received a Commendation Award at the ceremony for actions he took in March, while off duty and with his family.
While Hoffman and his family were shopping at the Michigan City Lighthouse Outlet Mall, he saw Michigan City Police officers in foot pursuit of a suspect. Hoffman identified himself as a state police officer and assisted the Michigan City officers in the pursuit.
As the suspect ran into a clothing store he grasped his waistband as he ran behind a clothing rack and then stooped to the ground. Hoffman noticed that the man appeared to place something under the clothing rack. As Hoffman held the suspect at gunpoint, Michigan City Police officers took the man into custody. Hoffman located a firearm under the clothing rack where the suspect was attempting to hide.
Hoffman was commended for taking immediate and decisive action that resulted in the capture of an armed fleeing suspect. Hoffman currently lives in Elkhart County and has been a member of the Indiana State Police since 1999.
