Ethan Pike never played football until he decided to come out and play this season for the Bremen Lions football program. In last night’s 2A Regional Championship, Ethan Pike made two spectacular touchdown catches that helped lead his Lions to a 35-21 victory over the Wheeler Bearcats (12-1) in Valparaiso.
“Ethan is a great kid with some great ability”, said Coach Bob Holmes. “Those catches were tough, but perfectly placed by Nate (Leeper) just so Ethan could grab both of them.”
The first Pike touchdown came off the first possession of the ballgame with Leeper found Pike in the corner and simply outleaped his defender for the 10 yard touchdown catch making it 7-0 Lions early.
“When Wheeler kept answering our scores in the first half, we knew this game was going to be a tough one to get.”, said Bremen Senior QB Nate Leeper. “But we didn’t give up and we needed that score at the end of the second quarter. I knew we had a chance to change momentum if we just made the plays we can. I just threw it up into the far corner and hoped Ethan would come down with it…and he did. Everybody did their job. That was a big score for us.”
“I felt the biggest score came at the start of the third quarter. We made some adjustments in our run game and kept having success with Braxton. We kept running at them before they could adjust. Braxton was ripping off 20+ yard gains until he finally scored a minute and half into the second half. That was the biggest score of the night eventually.”
Bremen also a couple of defensive stops at crucial parts of the ballgame. One defensive stop came with a Wheeler fourth and two at the B-25 yard line in the third quarter. The Lions stopped Naspinski’s run and took over on downs.
“I just love these kids. 13-0. That’s incredible, in what these kids have accomplished so far. Incredible!”, said Coach Holmes. “I’m so proud of them.”
The Lions will now face Fort Wayne Luers on the southside of Ft. Wayne next Friday night for the Semi-State Championship. WTCA will bring all the action on am1050 & am1050.com.
