06/01/11 This past weekend Dragon Racing Fuels and Newton Oil presented the Annual Jim Blount Memorial at the Plymouth Speedway for the Dragon Racing Fuel Outlaw Late Models. The cars rolled into the pits all afternoon leading up to the event.
The evening began with qualifying for the four classes of cars in action. J.R. Roahrig set the pace for the outlaw with a blistering lap of 13.051 seconds. In the Teacher’s Credit Union Late Models, Nick Pressler set the pace for the class with a time around the 3/8 mile in 14.203 seconds. The street stocks saw D.J. Frost set the track on fire with a lap of 15.182 seconds. In the front wheel drives Tom Hellinga set the pace with a lap of 16.471 seconds.
After the opening ceremonies presented by Oliver Ford Lincoln it was time for heat racing action. The late models were the first class out for their heat racing action. John Barlow took the checkered flag for his first victory of 2011.
The outlaw late models ran three sixteen lap heats with big money on the line for the winner. Picking up heat wins were Dave Mania, Andy Bozell, and Robbie Ferrier.
The street stocks watched Andrew DeVreese cross the line first in their eight lap heat event. In the front wheel drives Tom Hellinga added to his point lead with another heat win.
After a short intermission it was time for the feature racing action. In the late model feature the racing was close but John Barlow got everything together to grab his feature win of the night. Coming across the line behind Barlow to finish on the podium respectively were John Marshall and Ron Maynard Junior.
The seventy-five lap Jim Blount Memorial was a lightening fast race with a great matchup out front for most the race. Andy Bozell broke out to the lead with Brent Jack in tow. After a tight side-by-side race Jack was able to get around Bozell on the inside and never looked back. He went on to grab his first ever Blount Memorial feature win adding his name to only four others in the race’s history to win the event. He was followed close across the line by Andy Bozell. Chad Blount made a pass in the final ten laps to get around Bobby Stremme and round out the podium. Stremme came in fourth and Phil Bozell finished in fifth.
In the street stocks Andrew DeVreese continued running strong and went out to the early lead and began to pull away for the race win. He was followed in second by Robert Reed and Kevin Gunkel got another podium finish with a strong third place finish.
The front wheel drives had a great start to their feature with the competitors going three wide in turn one. The leader going down the back straightaway was Tom Hellenga. He held on for the win as he held off second place finishing Ryan Hoffman and Tom Taylor in third.
