03/24/11 The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced lane restrictions and short-term overnight closures along the U.S. 20/31 Bypass as crews begin work to replace the Ireland Road bridge over the highway.

Beginning Monday, March 14, traffic on the Bypass was restricted to one lane in each direction near the bridge so crews can prepare the bridge and surrounding areas for the project. The lane restrictions will remain in place until September.

Beginning Wednesday, March 23, all lanes of the Bypass are closed between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. while the current bridge structure is demolished. The demolition work is expected to take four nights; however the work schedule is subject to change in the event of inclement weather.

During the closure, north/westbound traffic will be detoured north along Michigan Street and west on State Road 23 (S.R. 23), back to the Bypass. South/eastbound traffic will be detoured east on S.R. 23 and south on Main Street, back to the Bypass.

St. Joseph County officials have indicated that Ireland Road will be closed between Linden Road and Locust Road.
