October 2011 Indiana Unemployment Report

11/28/11 More Hoosiers are rejoining the labor force, and the preliminary seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate moved slightly from 8.9 percent to 9.0 percent in October. The U.S. rate declined from 9.1 percent to 9.0 percent this month.

 

Indiana’s unemployment rate is equal to or lower than all of our neighboring states for the ninth month in a row. Private sector employment decreased by 2,900 jobs.Indiana’s labor force has increased by 36,000 in the last three months, the largest three-month increase since late 1993.

 

“More people coming back to the labor force caused a slight uptick in the unemployment rate after a strong increase in employment last month,” said Mark W. Everson, Commissioner of the Department of Workforce Development.

 

Locally Marshall County is ranked 26thwith a rate of 9.5 the end of October.  Looking back over the last 6 months Marshall County rates have been: 9.2 in September, 9.5 in August, 9.3 in July, 9.2 in June 9.1 in May and 9.0 in April.

 

Looking at counties surrounding Marshall County for October have Kosciusko at 8.0 ranked 61st, Fulton County is 41st with a rate of 8.8, Saint Joseph 9.7 ranked 20th, Starke County 11th with a rate of 10.3 and Elkhart is second in the state with a rate of 11.3.

 

Sectors showing significant employment gains in October include: Trade, Transportation & Utilities (1,900), Government (1,100) and Manufacturing (600). Losses were shown in the Construction field (- 2,600), Private Education and Health Services (-1,400) and Financial Activities (- 1,100) sectors showed significant decline.
