The Plymouth Pilgrims had time to make some adjustments to their overall game coming off a good performance against John Glenn last week. Heading into the Sectionals on Wednesday night, Plymouth was looking for four quarters of fundamental basketball with a purpose and that’s what happened. Senior Brock Smith scored 16pts to help the Pilgrims advance to the second round of the Plymouth Sectionals with a 56-37 win over New Prairie.
“New Prairie is a difficult team to prepare for. They keep attacking offensively to either get a foul or get the highest percentage shot, a lay-up.”, said Head Coach Kevin Stuckmeyer. “We had to “Take a Charge” tonight. It was the only way we would give ourselves a chance to slow them down. The other key which was crucial was our patience on offense. We were fundamentally sound on both sides of the ball tonight which was pleasing to see.”
This year New Prairie had only been outscored in the first quarter 5 times. They’ve only won one of those 5 games so it was essential for Plymouth to get off to a quick start. True to the stat, Plymouth jumped out to a 12-0 lead at the 5:24 mark of the first quarter.
For the rest of the game, it was about runs for both teams. Plymouth had a 15 point lead at one point, then the Cougars climbed within 8, then Plymouth was back up by 13.
“We made key plays throughout the ballgame that kept New Prairie from getting their “Big” runs that they’ve been known to have this year. We (Plymouth) kept their top scorer (Mark Wagner) six points under his average and most of their starters well under their average. It’s going to take that kind of defensive effort throughout the sectionals if we are going to defend our title. I even more pleased with how we ran our offense. We need to keep this momentum up.”, said Stuckmeyer.
Plymouth will play the second game of the Semi-Final round of the Plymouth Sectionals on Friday night. The first game will feature CMA (14-6) vs Mishawaka Marian (15-6) at 6:30 pm. Plymouth (7-14) vs South Bend St. Joseph (11-10) in game two.
WTCA’s coverage begins at 7PM from “The Rock”.
