The Plymouth Optimist Club Announces Tri-Star Basketball Contest Winners

February 15, 2011

02/16/11 The Optimist Club of Plymouth held its annual Tri-Star Basketball Contest on Saturday, February 5th, at the Plymouth High School.  Despite the snow, it was a successful afternoon for some of Plymouth’s boys and girls ages 8-13.  The Tri-Star Contest is made up of three events; shooting, passing and dribbling.  Each contestant competes in all three events, their scores are added together and the boy and girl with the highest score in each of six age groups (ages 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13) are declared the winners.  Trophies are awarded for 1st and 2nd place and every participant was awarded a ribbon.  The 1st place winners advance to the regional competition on Saturday February 12th in Warsaw. This year’s 1st place winners were Adam Hunter (9); Braeden Baker (10); Patrick Houser (11); Tyler Krick (12); Kameron Ray (13); MacKenzie Dejarnatt (8); and Kaitlyn Carothers (10).  2nd place winners were Konner Ray (9); Jared Thieling (11); Michael Lamb (12); and Ella Hissong (8). The Optimist Club had help making this experience for youth even more fun, as the following companies furnished prizes given to each participant: Ponderosa, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Kings Buffet, Long John Silvers, Dairy Queen, Quick’s Lanes, Yoder’s Sports Center, The Lodge Bakery, and Town and Country Chevrolet .  The Optimist Club thanks the businesses and Plymouth High School for their support.

Optimist Clubs are dedicated to “Bringing Out the Best in Kids.”  Optimist Clubs conduct positive service projects in their communities aimed at providing a helping hand to youth. With their upbeat attitude, Optimist Club members empower young people to be the best they can be.

Since each Club is autonomous and run by members in their community, each Optimist Club determines the needs of the young people in its community and conducts programs to meet those needs.  Every year, Optimists around the world conduct 65,000 service projects and serve well over six million young people.

The Plymouth Optimist Club provides four college scholarships each year.  They also host an Essay Contest and a Tri-Star Basketball Contest.  Every year the Plymouth Optimists sponsor a Tennis Tournament, a Youth Bowling Team, and two students to attend Law & Order Camp.  They contribute to the United Way of Marshall County, Marshall County Reading Council, Community Food Pantry, After Prom, Boys and Girls Club, the Kizer Athletic Award and other not-for-profit organizations.  At Thanksgiving they help provide holiday meals and at Christmas they “Adopt a Family” to provide gifts and food to needy families.  The Optimist Club also plants flowers in Downtown Plymouth and participates in the Yellow River Festival.
