05/17/11 The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will hold a public open house on Tuesday, May 17, to update the public on the progress of the Major Moves New U.S. 31 project in St. Joseph and Marshall counties. The purpose of the open house is to present updated design and construction plans and to present project information in an informal setting. INDOT’s project team will be available to address questions and comments.

INDOT officials will be on hand to discuss progress, plans and the time line with interested members of the community.  This is a public meeting and open house with information on the Major Moves New U.S. 31 project.

Construction and final design are underway for the upgrade and realignment of US 31 from US 30 in Plymouth to the US 20 bypass in South Bend. Approximately 15 miles of the 20-mile corridor will be built on new terrain east of the existing route. Construction is well underway and is expected to continue through 2014.

The goal of the project is to reduce congestion and improve safety and mobility along the route. This project is part of the larger Major Moves initiative to upgrade the route to freeway standards from Indianapolis to South Bend.

The open house will be held on Tuesday, May 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Jackson Intermediate School, 5001 South Miami Road in South Bend.
