04/14/11  On Saturday April 9, state troopers from the Bremen Post along with medics from the South Bend Fire Department, responded to 66521 Miami Road in Bremen after they received reports that a subject had shot himself.

Emergency personnel arrived on the scene around 8:00 p.m. to find several subjects tending to Dan P. Carr, 44, in the front yard of his residence.  Carr was suffering from an apparent accidental self inflicted gunshot wound to his upper leg.  Carr was treated at the scene by paramedics and then transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.  It is believed that Carr’s injuries were not life threatening.

According to several witnesses at the scene Carr and several other subjects had been target shooting into an earth embankment located across the driveway of the residence when the accident took place.  During the course of the investigation state police recovered several guns that were used that evening and discovered that one of them had been reported stolen by the Noble County Sheriff’s Department in 2002.  The stolen gun, a Remington 870 12 gauge shotgun was found to belong to William D. Carter, 46, of South Bend.  Carter was arrested for possession of stolen property and taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.  The recovered stolen shotgun was not used in the accidental shooting.

*All subjects arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
