09/02/11 The Union-North School Board is wasting no time in seeking a replacement superintendent for the corporation that includes LaVille Jr.-Sr. High School and LaVille Elementary School.

Current Superintendent, Dr. Terry Barker, tendered his resignation to the board effective October 3, 2011. It was publicly announced late on Tuesday that Barker has accepted the job of superintendent for the School City of Mishawaka. Union-North Board members were told individually only days before the announcement was formally made during a special meeting of the Mishawaka Board. Administrative staff at the schools were also informed on the Friday prior to the announcement.

Barker came to the Union-North top job in July, 2009.

The search could focus on an interim superintendent due to the time restraints.

Barker’s resignation came as a surprise to many in the community since he had requested, and received, an extension in June of 2010 of one year to his then two-year contract. At this point, the corporation is obligated to continue to pay Barker within the provisions of that contract until his resignation date is reached or “buy out” that portion of the contract.

Reportedly, Barker’s last day with Union-North will be October 2.

According to Board President Mark Dickson, they will be using the services of the University Search Team, consisting of representatives from Indiana University, Purdue University, Ball State University and Indiana State University, to help them in the search for a new superintendent. Dickson said, “We could be meeting with them as early as next week to get the process started.” Dickson indicated that they would also be updating the application for the position and have it available online by either next week or the following week.”
