08/12/11 A 2008 graduate of Culver Military Academy has been chosen by U.S. Military Academy to serve as the First Captain for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Charlie Phelps (Woodinville, Wash.) was named to the Academy’s highest cadet position on Aug. 8. Phelps, who will also be known as the Brigade Commander, officially begins his duties at West Point on Aug. 14.

Phelps, a military history major, is responsible for the overall performance of the approximately 4,400-member Corps of Cadets. His duties include implementing a class agenda and acting as a liaison between the Corps and the administration. In addition, Phelps is at the top of a pyramid of cadet commanders who make up the chain-of-command for the Corps of Cadets at West Point.

At Culver, Phelps earned the top position as Regimental Commander. He is the second CMA regimental commander to obtain the top position at a service academy in the past two years. In January, 2010, Keegan Kinkade ’06 (Greenwood, Ind.) was named the Brigade Commander at the U.S. Naval Academy.
