04/23/12 A group of Ancilla College students put their classroom learning into practice when they visited Knox Golden Living Center on March 29. The students are part of Ancilla’s Social Gerontology course. Social gerontology focuses on the social aspects of aging in later adulthood. The students hosted a bingo tournament and distributed small gifts and candy, which they had collected earlier, to the residents.
Sam Soliman, the course’s instructor, explained, “We made sure that everyone received at least one prize; most had several, and we had just as much fun as the residents. This was such a wonderful opportunity for my students to apply classroom theories into real world practice.” Ancilla student Brian Pearison commented, “The Golden Living residents were so warm and welcoming; I hope to come back soon; it’s easy to forget how the smallest amount of volunteer time can be so meaningful to others.” Another student, Donna Scott, remarked, “Throughout the semester, Mr. Soliman has exposed our class to different kinds of job opportunities in relation to caring for the elderly, and he encouraged us to plan events in our own local communities to gain experience. I was thrilled when Golden Living Center wanted us to come.”
Ancilla College encourages all of its students to participate in giving back to their local communities. The college offers an associate’s degree in the Behavioral Sciences as well as other degree programs including Nursing, Business, and Criminal Justice.
