PORT HURON, MI –The Ancilla Chargers baseball team split a double header on the road this past weekend with St. Clair County Community College losing the first game 4-3 and making a dramatic comeback in the second game to come away with a 7-5 victory.
In the first game, the Chargers managed seven hits and knocked in three runs, but some costly errors spelled the difference. Pitcher Josh Copp gave up just three hits but St. Clair managed to score several times off of errors to seal the win.
“Josh deserved a better outcome,” said Ancilla coach Joe Yonto. “He pitched a three hitter, striking out seven batters, but three unearned runs was the difference. At the plate we hit the ball hard the whole game, only striking out once. But we couldn’t get the timely hits. A couple of errors on the defensive end hurt us.”
In the second game of the afternoon St. Clair came out swinging, knocking in four runs in the bottom of the first. The Chargers kept their composure and came back with two runs in the fourth and three runs in the seventh to tie the game at five. The Chargers added two more in the eighth to win the game.
Yonto was very pleased with his team’s performance. “This was an excellent team win! Pat Kinney and Pat Knight did a solid job on the mound and we had the never give up attitude. Fletcher Goodman made a key hit in the eighth to drive in two runs. The spark came from Tyler Sexton who made an all out diving catch in center with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and a runner on 3rd. That took it to the 8th where we scored two for the win.”
The Chargers will be at home on Tuesday for a double header against Glen Oaks Community College. The first game is slated to start at 2:00 p.m.
