02/01/12  A man is out of the hospital and in jail after leading police on a wild car chase.

Duane Longacre, 27, of Plymouth was pulled out of the St. Joseph River Tuesday morning.

South Bend police say just after midnight they tried to stop a car at 25th Street and Mishawaka Avenue. That’s in the River Park area of South Bend.

They had information the car was stolen. They say Longacre didn’t stop.

Eventually the car went off the road, went airborne, struck a tree and he jumped out and into the river. He went in near Logan and Pleasant streets in Mishawaka and police fished him out.

“Fortunately, with the quick response of our officers here, they were able to secure him, threw him a rescue line, and pulled him out of the river,” said Capt. Jeff Rynearson with South Bend police. “He is in custody now.”

Longacre was taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries, along with a police officer. Investigators say Longacre was dumping a can of anhydrous ammonia out the window during the chase.
