08/22/12 The Falloween Festival in Walkerton is September 21st through the 23rd. Added to the list of activities is the “Great Bowls of Salsa” contest open to high school students, amateur, and professional culinary competitors on Sunday, September 23rd. Salsa is defined as fresh sauces composed as pepper, tomato based, fruit based, or sauces all made from fresh vegetables, which will include hot sauces.
This is the first competition of its type to be held at the Falloween Festival. Three noted area chefs will be judging the competition. There will be experienced food preparers in the kitchen to assist and oversee the production of the salsas in the competition at John Glenn High School from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Also planned are displays and tasting of these salsas open to the public to determine a popular vote from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Winners will be a judges choice, popular choice, and a best student choice.
The salsa competitors will complete for trophies, award gifts/money and the best student will also compete for a chance to commercially prepare their entry for commercial production, a spot on the globally broadcast, and locally produced cooking show, Cooking with Randy Z. Students will also compete for $6,000 of scholarship awards from the Chef’s Academy Culinary Institute in Indianapolis.
Introduced students, armature, and professional culinary inclined persons may enter the contest via a link at www.falloweenfest.com August 20th through September 21st. Rules and an entry form are available at the “Great Bowls of Salsa” link on the website. There is a $10 entry fee for each salsa entered. Profits from this competition will be donated to the John Glenn School Scholarship Fund, which has raised over $48,000 for student scholarships since its beginning in the past three years.
