03/08/12  Plymouth Fire Department responded to the scene of a grass fire Wednesday afternoon near Ivory Court, a subdivision off of Michigan Street. High gusts of wind felled a large tree near the railroad tracks, causing the tree to pull down a power line.

Plymouth fire chief Rod Miller said that the power line had 69,000 volts of electricity going through it, and instructed firefighters to give the down line a wide berth.

Firefighters squelched the flames quickly and waited on scene until NIPSCO arrived. Miller said that NIPSCO would cut the power line into pieces and remove it.

There was no damage to nearby homes in the subdivision, but several residents came outside to observe the billows of smoke emanating from the scene.
