Mayor's Youth Council 2015 officersIn 2010 Plymouth Mayor, Mark Senter revived the Mayor’s Youth Council.  The council was created by city ordinance in 1982 with a purpose to promote direct communication between the youth of the community, the city administration, and the community as a whole.  The hope was to create projects related to Youth Council purposes and objectives; to encourage the City to provide activities for its younger people; to support, aid and assist persons or organizations with ideas or projects which promote the Youth Council and provide opportunities to work with City government.

Senter’s youth council recently elected their officers for 2015. The positions in which these young men and women ran for include: president, vice president, secretary, public relations, and treasurer. Karly Gruett, was elected as president and Gabby Garver was chosen as vice president. Garrett Garver will take on the role as secretary and Gloria Garcia was elected as their public relations officer. Finally, Melanie Cooper holds the position as treasurer.

All officers for the Mayor’s Youth Council are venerable Plymouth High School students with involvement in a variety of extracurricular activities. President Karly Gruett has been a part of the PHS Marching Band for the past 3 years. She is in the middle of her third season as a gymnast at PHS and obtains a position in the National Honor Society and Student Council.

Gabby Garver, also a junior, not only has been accepted into the National Honor Society, but has been a state finalist for Speech and Debate and Solo & Ensemble. Gabby has been involved in numerous school theater performances as well and is also a Student Council member.

Garrett is also an exceptional student and a class officer of the sophomore class at PHS He is also a member of the Speech and Debate team.

Gloria, a junior at PHS, holds the position as vice president for Key Club, is a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council, and is currently competing for the Speech and Debate team.

Melanie, a student from the junior class is also a member of the PHS Speech and Debate team and also holds a spot in the National Honor Society and Student Council.

Other members of the Youth Council are Anna Bockman, Leah Smith, Kara Morwood, Takis Kurtis, Curtis Smith, Mathew Gerard, Morgan Oberley, Ashley Harrell, Hugh Smith and Grace Cupka.  Sponsors of the Youth Council are Mayor Senter, Mike and Sue Gruett and Scott Michel.

Any students from the 5th to 12th grades are eligible to join from both Plymouth and St. Michael School Systems.  Contact the mayor’s office at 936-6717 for an application or go to the City website to the mayor’s page to download a form.
