05/11/12 Annual Age of Excellence awards were presented at the Century Center in South Bend on Thursday, May 10th. One volunteer from Miller’s Merry Manor and three volunteers from Miller’s Assisted Living of Plymouth were among the nominees at the ceremony. The purpose of the Age of Excellence awards is to “recognize those individuals who support their loved ones and their community through daily acts of kindness, compassion and selflessness.  They remind us in the most fundamental way, what is most meaningful in life.”

John Guyse of Plymouth was nominated in the category of Volunteer of the Year (under 60) by MMM.  Nominees from the ALF included Annette Ray of Bourbon for Volunteer of the Year (under 60), Juanita Stapan of Plymouth for Kimble Volunteer of the Year (over 60) and The Marshall County Church Orchestra represented by Don Harness for Volunteer Group of the Year.

Christopher Lowell was the keynote speaker. He is well known for his historic trailblazing of the how-to décor and lifestyle genre that began on TV in the 9o’s.  He spoke of his parent’s volunteerism and a selfless teacher who also made an impact on him while in high school.  He encouraged everyone to never hesitate to commit a random act of kindness.

“God created us so that we could create other things”, Lowell explained.  “The little random acts of kindness are what changes our world – one act at a time.”

Following his inspiring speech Terry McFadden of WNDU Channel 16 news presented the volunteer awards in eight different categories.  All nominees received a certificate of appreciation. The competition was stiff and while those nominated from Miller’s were not the top winners of the day; they are all winners in the eyes of the Miller’s residents and staff.  The gift of giving one’s time is never taken for granted.  Volunteers are always welcomed at either Miller’s facility.  If you would enjoy volunteering at MMM call 936-9981 and ask for April Cooper.  To volunteer at the ALF call 936-9801 and ask for Cindy Flagg.
