01/26/12 Senior Ball State University student and Plymouth native, Amy Jacobs, serves on the Ball State University Dance Marathon committee to raise funds for Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, the hospital that has cared for her sister. Through her philanthropic efforts, Amy has inspired her sister Hannah to start a Riley Dance Marathon at Plymouth High School.
Last year, Hannah visited Amy at Ball State University Dance Marathon and saw Bremen High School’s 2nd annual Riley Dance Marathon raise over $6,000. Hannah, a long-time Riley Hospital for Children patient and sophomore at Plymouth High School teamed up with her friend, Cassie Gaines, another Riley Hospital kid, to bring the party to Plymouth.
The Jacobs sisters, Cassie, Plymouth High School Director of Counseling Aimee Portteus, and 200 classmates will gather at 3 p.m. on January 28 in the Plymouth High School cafeteria. They will dance until half time of the boys’ varsity basketball game and then move into the gymnasium for the fundraising reveal and “morale dance,” a group-dance featuring all of the participants. The Plymouth High School Dance Marathon committee hopes the inaugural event will raise thousands of dollars for Riley Hospital.
Hannah and Cassie have worked tirelessly to fundraise for the marathon at school and athletic events. Even teachers have joined the cause by making donations in exchange for a “Teacher Jeans Day.” For all of Hannah’s efforts, Amy could not be prouder of her “tough and driven” younger sister. “She is my inspiration for everything I do,” Amy said.
Each year, more than 1,100 patient visits take place at Riley Hospital for Children involving children from Marshall County.
