12/21/12 Plymouth native Maggie Kubley took time from her busy, Chicago schedule to come to Miller’s Senior Living Community. While there she visited her grandmother, Katie Kubley; and she also performed her one-woman tribute to Nat King Cole. Kubley is well known for her musical ability. In 2010 she performed a concert of Patsy Kline music during National Assisted Living Week.
Kubley’s concerts are beautifully orchestrated and educational as well as just plain fun. She takes time to research the artist to whom she’s paying tribute and between songs she tells interesting stories about the origins of the song and tid-bits of information about the time era and the artist.
Kubley states that Nat King Cole was one of her favorite performers and that first and foremost he considered himself a pianist. He didn’t really become known as a crooner until he recorded “The Christmas Song” and it became a hit. Even though it is December that is the only Christmas song Kubley sang. Nat King Cole had so many great hits and other songs that never got recorded she chose to stay away from traditional Christmas music.
Other Cole favorites shared by Kubley included “Paper Moon”, “Route 66”, “For Sentimental Reasons”, “Mona Lisa”, “Nature Boy”, “Smile”, and “L-O-V-E”. Kubley ended her program with the ever popular “Unforgettable” because in her words “it seems appropriate to end with this song because Nat King Cole was – unforgettable!”
Following her concert Kubley took time to great each resident and guest. Many in the audience reminisced with Kubley about her youth in Plymouth and their memories of her on the stage of Plymouth High School in musical productions.
