04/25/12 The Annual Pinewood Derby for Cub Scouts is this weekend in Plymouth at the new location of Menominee Elementary School.

The pinewood derby is a racing event for Cub Scouts in the Boy Scouts of America. Cub Scouts, with the help of parents, build their own cars from wood, usually from kits containing a block of pine, plastic wheels and metal axles. Cars will go through the tech inspection beginning at 10:30 with racing starting at noon.

This year, as a special treat, a car show is planned in the morning before the Pinewood Derby Races. It will be held at Menominee School here in Plymouth and it is FREE! The car show is from 9 a.m. till noon in the school parking lot.

Scoutmaster Mark Styers said, “Well the Pinewood Derby’s main purpose is for cub scouts in grades 1st through 5th to run the cars they have created.”  He continued. “But we believe in making this a family experience so we also run an open class which allows Boy Scout’s, parents, brothers, sisters, or really anyone who has a car to race.”   He closed by saying, “Its all about family fun!!!”
