03/14/12 Friday morning City Councilman Wayne Smith presided over the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Donuts by Design in the Kroger Plaza on North Michigan Street.

Owners Harmony and Chris Norvell are from North Liberty and his donut designer, Amy Holland is from Plymouth.  This is the first venture into the restaurant business for the Norvells although Chris has been in management with a large retailer for 10 years.

Norvell said, “The idea came about over vacation when my wife and two kids were driving to Disney world in Florida and stopped at a donut store for breakfast.  They were out of my favorite, chocolate cake with strawberry icing.  My wife and I almost simultaneously said, they should have a donut shop where you make it the way you want it, and thus Donuts by Design.”

The donuts are freshly made each morning from a special top secret recipe that is locked up tighter than the Bushes baked beans recipe.  They offer a donut designing station with toppings and fillings that will change from time to time. Chris said, “Currently we have 12 toppings and 4 fillings to choose from in any combination.”

They not only offer delicious tasking donuts but a premium roast coffee.  Norvell said, “We have a regular flow of an American lighter coffee, Italian dark roast and a full body decaf.”  They are expecting delivery of a cappuccino machine very soon and will be able to make cappuccinos, latte’s, mocha’s, espresso, and Godiva hot chocolate.  Donuts by Design will also feature a seasonal coffee throughout the year.
