This month, members of the Marshall County Solid Waste District Board of Directors heard the proposal to increase employee hours next year from 35 hours weekly to 40 hours weekly.
Marianne Peters, Executive Director of the Recycle Depot said her employees came to her with a suggestion of increasing their hours in 2024. She said currently they work from 8:30 to 3:30 and they would like to change that to 8 to 4 daily.
The proposal is to add five more hours to the employees’ work schedule without any changes to the hours that the Recycle Depot facility is open.
Peters told the board this change will increase their safety because the employees will have 30 extra minutes in the morning to prepare the Depot for customers and to gear up with their PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and 30 minutes in the afternoon to assist late arriving customers and make sure the facility is safely shut down.
The solid waste board agreed, and the new employee schedule will start on January 1, 2024.
The board suggested Peters ask for the needed additional appropriations later in the year to make up for the extra wages. Peters said the additional appropriations will come from money they have already saved in the rainy-day fund.
The director’s salary or hours will not change in 2024, because she is already working 40 hours each week.
After January 1, Solid Waste employee weekday hours will be: 7-4 on Mondays, 8-4 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 8-3 on Fridays. Employees working on the first and third Saturdays from 7:30 – 12:30 are paid in comp time.
The public weekday hours for the Recycle Depot will not change. Operation hours are 7:30 – 3:30 on Mondays, 8:30 – 3:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and 8:30 – 2:30 on Fridays. The Recycle Depot is open to the public on the first and third Saturday of each month from 8-12 noon.
