09/18/12 Emergency responders from LaPaz, Polk Township and Plymouth responded to a bad crash Sunday evening just before 10 on Michigan Road just south of 3rd Road.

19 year old Katie Nelson of Walkerton was driving a red, 2001, Olds Alero north bound on Michigan Road, just south of 3rd Road when she went left of the center line for unknown reasons and struck a 1998 International semi tractor-trailer driven by 33 year old Aaron Ganshorn of Argos.

Ganshorn attempted to avoid the collision by traveling into the vacant north bound lane but was unable to avoid contact.  The two vehicle hit on the front passenger sides of each vehicle.  The impact caused the semi to lose its front passenger side tires and diesel tank.  The semi continued through the front yards of two properties on the east side of the roadway.

Nelson’s Alero was pushed off into the south bound shoulder and came to rest facing east.

Aaron Ganshorn was not injured in the crash.  Katie Nelson and her front seat passenger, 18 year old Melvin Snyder was air-lifted from the scene and transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for unknown injuries.  He was listed in fair condition Monday evening and Katie Nelson was listed in good condition.  19 year old Josh Gains was transported to a Hospital by ambulance.

Michigan Road was closed for an hour while crews cleaned up the accident and 90 to 100 gallons of disel fuel that was spilled in the crash.

The cause of the crash is still unknown.
