11/27/12 The first grade classes at Triton Elementary have been reading and learning about Honey Bees for the past two weeks.

Mr. Shawn Hooley, a local beekeeper, visited the first grade to share his knowledge and experiences.  Mr. Hooley brought a miniature hive to show how the hive looks on the inside.  He demonstrated how he can contain the bees and how he extracts the honey.   Mr. Hooley brought his protective clothing to show us, but he admitted to getting stung anyway!   He also explained how the bee releases a scent called a pheromone when it stings that alerts other bees to danger.  He uses a smoker to calm the bees when he works with them.

He shared some interesting and funny stories.  We now know that the post office does not like to deliver bees!
