09/06/12 A scam targeting utility customers is impacting several states across the country. Many utility customers throughout the nation, including some NIPSCO customers, have been affected by this scam. Victims are asked to provide personal information, such as a Social Security number, in exchange for a payment from the government applied to their utility bill. The scammers then give victims fraudulent bank routing number to pay their bill.

Nationwide, most of the exploited customers were contacted by phone, but some have been approached via social media and word of mouth.

To prevent future instances of this scam with our customers, NIPSCO has blocked the affected routing number from its payment systems.

Anyone who thinks they may have been affected by the scam should contact our 24-Hour Customer Service Center at 1-800-4NIPSCO (1-800-464-7726).
