Woodcraft Camp Centennial with Summer Alumni Homecoming and the Culver Lake Fest Parade

  07/20/12 Culver’s Woodcraft Camp (for boys and girls 9-13) is celebrating its 100

year Anniversary during this weekend’s Summer Alumni Homecoming Weekend.

The foundation for Woodcraft was laid by a trio of national and international

figures in scouting, naturalism, and conservation a Daniel Carter Beard, Ernest

Thompson Seton, and Robert Baden-Powell.

Culver Woodcraft Camp is a six-week, all-activity camp. Over 60 electives provide an unparalleled opportunity to participate in unique activities, improve academics and compete in athletics, all while improving self- confidence. Woodcrafters also develop an understanding of and appreciation for nature and other cultures. Drawing from 40 states and 40 countries, Woodcrafters make new friends, discover and develop worthwhile interests, and acquire new skills in a high-challenge, high-support environment.

On Saturday at10 a.m. the Culver Lake Fest Parade theme is the Woodcraft Centennial with Dick Zimmerman serving as parade marshal. Zimmerman is director of Woodcraft’s Indian Lore and Council Fire, Indian dance, programs and has been involved with Woodcraft Camp for 61 years. 100 Indian dancers from Woodcraft will also be featured in the parade.

At 12:45 p.m. the Woodcraft Concert Band and Choir will perform outside Orthwein Dining Hall at Woodcraft Camp.

At 5:30 p.m. the Drum & Bugle Corp will perform.  The Drum & Bugle Corp is the Woodcraft musical marching unit and has been an integral part of the camp since 1919. D&B plays for Thursday Retreats and at Sunday parades and other select performances. Last year, the D&B included girls for the first time.

At 8 p.m. Saturday the Garrison Parade will be held at the Riding Hall Terrace.  700 campers from Woodcraft and the 700 Upper Campers (ages 13-17) will gather on the parade field, where they will be joined by the Alumni Battalion for Pass in Review.
