03/25/13 State Representative Tim Harman (R-Bremen) congratulates the Bachtel/Filson family from Marshall County for receiving the Hoosier Homestead Award. The award was presented today by Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann and Agriculture Director Gina Sheets at the Indiana Statehouse.
The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes families with farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more. The Bachtel/Filson family farm has been owned and operated by the Bachtel/Filson family since 1912. Located in Plymouth, Ind., the family was recognized for their hard work and commitment to agriculture.
“This family exemplifies all the great traditions of Hoosier farming,” said Rep. Harman. “Agriculture is a cornerstone of Indiana, and I congratulate them on 109 years of excellence in farming.”
The program began in 1976 to acknowledge the contributions these families have made to Indiana agriculture. More than 5,000 farms have been recognized since the program was established.
Two awards ceremonies are held each year, in the spring and summer, to commemorate the achievements of the many outstanding Hoosier farmers across the state.
“The Bachtel/Filson family’s commitment to agriculture over the past 100 years has helped contribute to Indiana’s current economic success,” said Rep. Harman. “I wish them another 100 years of prosperous harvests.”
