Fire Crews from 6 Department Battle Mulch Fire at North Central Pallets

June 23, 2013

06/24/13 Firefighters from six different departments worked in the extreme heat Sunday afternoon battling a huge smoking pile of mulch at North Central Pallets on State Road 10 between Argos and Culver.

The call came into the Marshall County Dispatch Center at 1:33 Sunday and immediately sent Argos Firefighters to the company, a place they have been several time already this year.  Argos asked for assistance of with tankers and manpower from Culver and Plymouth fire departments.

Because North Central Pallets is out in the middle of the county, battling the smoldering mulch required firemen to shuttle water to the scene.  Tanker trucks shuttled from the scene to the closed hydrant, about 2 miles to the east at Vanadco on the west side of US31.

Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles and the railroad tracks were shut down for a while as crews battled the blaze.

Firefighters were on the scene for hours.  It took approximately five hours to bring the fire under control and then crews worked several more hours to know down hot spots.  Plymouth firefighters returned to their station about 8 p.m.
