01/22/13 Firefighters from three departments battled a barn fire in the bitter cold temperatures Monday morning south of Argos.

A neighbor called 9-1-1 about 9:30 and reported the barn fire at 18896 Kenilworth Road.  Argos firefighters could see the flames shooting from the 100 year old barn as they arrived on the scene and called for water and manpower support from the Rochester and Plymouth Fire Departments.

The strong winds and extreme cold temperatures were an extra obstacle.  In fact, the high winds caused the flames from the fire to spread to a couple of the out buildings. Within minutes the barn roof fell in and the whole structure was down.  Fire crews were able to save a nearby garage and protected the home from the blaze.

The property is listed as being owned by Mary A Wharton on the county’s GIS.

Argos Assistant Fire Chief Doug Middleton said the property is the home of one of their volunteer firefighters. He lives in the home with his in-laws.  The property has been in the family for three or four generations.

Firefighters suspect the fire was started by a wood burner and will continue to determine the cause of the blaze.  There were no injuries reported.
