10/17/13 On Tuesday, October 15th at 3:30 p.m. Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputy Jordan Rans responded to US 30 and Beech Road in reference to a three vehicle accident with injuries.  As officers were in route it was advised that a semi tractor and trailer and two passenger cars were involved in the crash.

Arriving on the scene officers learned that 42 year old Nazario Oviedo Jr. of Bourbon was driving a 2003 Dodge Caravan south on Beech Road.  He crossed safely over the west bound lanes of US 30 but failed to yield the right of way to an eastbound semi.

59 year old Doren L. Smith of Arlington, Ohio was the driver of the 2007 Kenworth Semi Tractor traveling east bound on US 30.  Mr. Ovideo struck the front driver’s side of the semi causing his vehicle to go into the grassy median and roll over.  Mr. Oviedo was ejected from the vehicle.

After impact, the semi lost control of all steering and ran into the grass median causing the tractor and trailer to overturn and lose the contents of the trailer all over the roadway.  The semi then continued sliding north across both westbound lanes of US 30 where it struck a 2009 Mercury Milan driven by 44 year old Mindy K. Thompson of Bremen.

Mr. Oviedo was airlifted from the scene to South Bend Memorial Hospital to be treated for injuries sustained from the accident.  All others involved in the crash was treated at the scene and released.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by the Bourbon Fire and EMS, Indiana State Police, INDOT and Reichert and Knepp Wrecker Service.
