07/23/13 A local quilter heard about the terrible accident Argos teenager Courtney Demont had on April 18th and did a fundraiser for her.

The sewer who wishes to be anonymous had been invited to the Notre Dame Women’s Basketball Awards Banquet but the original one had been postponed because Skyler Diggins wasn’t able to attend.  The girls were thinking about the trip back to South Bend to attend the banquet and it was suggested that the quilter bring quilt blocks and have the members of the girls basketball team autograph each block for a quilt.  The banquet ended up being the week following Courtney Demont’s accident.

While standing in line for three hours waiting to get the player’s autographs, the girls overheard some people in front of them talking about Courtney Demont and the huge medical bills her family would have.  The quilter said, “That’s my cause.”

She immediately started on the quilt and knew she had to have it complete in less than a month for the May 13th Golf Fore Courtney golf outing at TriWay.  That happened and the quilt traveled to many of the other fundraisers allowing people to purchase tickets to win the one of a kind quilt.

The quilter sold 1,117 tickets for the 60 x 72 quilt which has 30 blocks.  Each player autographed a block and the quilter embroidered the name and number on the block beside each autograph.

The winner, Cindy Thorpe from Argos was drawn as the winner at the Courtney Concert on July 13th and presented the quilt last week at WTCA just before Courtney and her mother Jessica Morlan were interviewed on the What’s Your Opinion Show.  Thorp said she traveled to the various locations where the quilt was on display and purchased close to 200 tickets.
