10/25/13 Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) Wednesday announced that he is accepting applications for nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and U.S. Military Academy. Interested applicants must submit the completed application packet available at www.coats.senate.gov by November 1, 2013.

“There is no greater honor for an American citizen than wearing the uniform in service to the United States,” said Coats. “I encourage all interested candidates to consider applying for a nomination through my office.”

Applicants may apply for and receive nominations from both their U.S. Representative and their two U.S. Senators. Applicants may also apply to the Vice President of the United States, who can nominate applicants at large.

Interested candidates must meet the following requirements as of July 1 of the year of admission to a military academy:

BACKGROUND:

Earlier this year, Senator Coats hosted “Academy Day” information sessions across the state to provide students the opportunity to learn more about applying to one of the U.S. Service Academies.

To assist in selecting the most qualified candidates, Senator Coats has formed an academy selection committee to review each application packet and select the top applicants for interviews. The interviews will be conducted early December and selected candidates will receive specific details in advance. In the weeks immediately following the interviews, Senator Coats will announce final candidates selected to receive a nomination.

For those interested in attending the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, a congressional nomination is not required since the Coast Guard Academy accepts candidates based on its own selection process. A candidate interested in applying must contact the Coast Guard Academy directly at www.cga.edu/admissions/.
